Chthe’ilist – The Demo That Can No Longer Be Ignored

I’ve not seen so much buzz for a demo in a long time, but Quebec Avant-Death Metal artists Chthe’ilist have created something truly special, and have generated a good amount of discussion on some of the forums (particularly at Metal Archives) with their demo “Amechth’ntaas’m’rriachth,” which can be downloaded for free from Hi Arc Tow.

Chthe’ilist from Québec play twisted, Lovecraftian Death Metal in the rarely reiterated style of Demilich, Adramelech and Timeghoul – serious cult bands that it takes balls to try and compare to. Chthe’ilist however manage respectably well and have enough of their own voice to not sound like a novelty ‘old-school’ rehash.

This one is not to be missed. The vocals are especially different, frequently primal and reptilian, evoking an aural image both of the swamps in which Inspector Legrasse led his horrific raid and of the old town of Innsmouth on the occasion of the rise of The Deep Ones.
An interview with instrumentalist/vocalist Phil Tougas can be found over at The Examiner.
